BlockIT: Tangible Interfaces for Music Education

Technologies: Javascript, HTML, CSS, C++, Qt, Metaio

Type: research project

BlockIT is a musical game based on tangible interfaces that aims to support children to learn the basics of music theory. BlockIT makes use of ID-based markers disposed in wooden blocks, which act as the tangible user interface and the output is shown in a separate GUI.

The gameplay is simple: there are different color blocks scattered around the player, each referring to a musical note. During the game, along with the sound of a metronome, a musical score is displayed on a monitor, while a sequence of notes will appear from right to left. The player must step on the block regarding the musical note at the time it enters the "play zone". If the player steps correctly on the block corresponding to the note, the sound of the note is played and the number of hits is increased.
